We kick off the new year with our member of the month spotlight on Iliane who shares some of her goals for the year and tells how being a part of RISE has opened her eyes in a number of ways.
We’d like to hear about you! What is your background?
I was born and raised in El Paso so the community has always had a special place in my heart. I became a UTEP graduate with my major in Marketing and Finance. After graduation, I left El Paso for work opportunities, got my MBA from Texas A&M, and came back home after 3 years. I married my high school sweetheart and we are going to celebrate our second anniversary this September. I have three Boston Terriers who we spoil rotten.
What would you tell someone that’s thinking of joining RISE?
El Paso is such a dynamic community and organizations such as RISE offer opportunities to young professionals who want to remain in El Paso, but also want to grow their careers and network. It can be difficult at times after you graduate to know where to go next to talk to people in the same career or life stage. With RISE, you are able to meet people who can open your eyes to new industries and ideas while also creating an avenue to ask questions about work and life as a working millennial.
Finish this sentence. My favorite RISE event I’ve attended was…
Attending What’s on Tap at the Fab Lab! The concept of being a creator and seeing there was space in the El Paso community to let artists be able to work and create speaks volumes to the untapped potential the community has. Events like this expose you to what else is going on with the community and especially with local business owners. If it wasn’t for RISE putting this together, I wouldn’t have known the lab existed or about the creator movement.
What are you happiest doing when you’re not working?
My husband is currently in medical school at Texas Tech here in El Paso, so I’m happiest when we can get to spend quality time together, especially going to the movies or being out with friends. I also am a big fan of puzzles and escape rooms.
What is a goal you have for yourself that you want to accomplish this year?
This year I want to recognize when to step back and disconnect. It is so difficult nowadays to not be preoccupied with notifications about work, social media, or getting sucked into binge watching the next talked about series. I want to make an effort to enjoy the company I am around, in and out of work. I think technology, as amazing as it is, can become a hindrance when trying to develop relationships and really appreciate people. Therefore, my goal is to put my phone down, make eye contact, and be a more active listener with everyone I speak with.
